Wonder how Lab Grown Diamonds are Made?

Lab Grown Diamond (also known as man-made diamond, cultured diamond or lab-created diamond) is a diamond in every way and an affordable luxury for everyone. It’s a much more environmentally friendly option than natural diamonds.

Are Lab Grown Diamonds Real? Can you tell the difference between lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds?

With the advancement in technology, our lab-grown diamonds have the same crystal structure, chemical composition and physical properties as natural mined diamonds. The lab-grown diamonds looks exactly the same as mined diamonds, the difference is the origin of the diamonds, one being mined from Mother Earth and the other created in labs. Only laboratories can tell the difference of the diamonds origin.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

The methods to create laboratory grown diamonds in the same way a natural diamond is grown beneath the Earth. Mined Diamonds are formed between 1 billion to 3 billion years with the high temperature and pressure approximately 100 miles below the earth’s crust.

There are two methods of creating a lab-grown diamonds:

HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)

There are three process in HPHT, a belt press, the cubic press and the split-sphere (BARS) press. These process make the equivalent temperature of the mined diamond growth, keeping the environment with high pressure and temperature.

This process begins with a small diamond seed which forms into a carbon. The seed is then exposed to strong temperature of 1500 degrees Celsius (approximate) and forms into 1.5 million pounds per square inch. The carbon melts and forms in to a diamonds around the seed. Then it is cooled into a pure carbon diamond.

CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)

This process begins with a thin slice of diamond seed that is placed in a sealed chamber. The chamber is filled with carbon rich-gas, such as Methane, and are ionized into plasma using lasers/microwaves technologies. The molecular bonds in the gases are broken and the pure carbon slowly crystallizes and sticks to the diamond seed. This process will take between 6-10 weeks.

How much are lab grown diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are averagely 40% less than mined diamonds. They are more affordable with the same 4Cs (clarity, color, cut and carat).

Which laboratories certify lab grown diamond reports?

IGI and GIA are the two laboratories that certifies lab grown diamonds.
